An American college student who was jailed in North Korea is on route to return in the U.S. after he has been released, CNN reports after the family confirmed the news. Otto Warmbier spent 17 months after North Korea’s authorities claimed they have security footage of him, trying to steal a banner. As CNN reports, the U.S. Secretary of State Rex Tillerson confirmed Warmbier’s release. He was detained on January 2016 at the airport in Pyongyang after the footage was used as evidence in his trial, where North Korea accused him for “hostile acts,” against the regime. He was sentenced to 15 years of hard labor. The news appeared the same day as Dennis Rodman arrived in North Korea for a visit. A basket ball star Rodman said his visit is not related to the release.
