US Treasury Imposes Sanction to 271 Syrian Scientific Workers

Time: 8:01 p.m. CEST

The United States on Monday imposed sanctions to 271 employees of Syrian government scientific agency that develops chemical weapons, as a response to the most recent alleged chemical attack in a province in Syria held by rebels. According to the information of the U.S. Treasury Department, 271 employees of Syria’s Scientific Studies and Research Center either are experts in chemistry or either worked at the center’s “chemical weapons program,” since 2012.

The U.S. Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin said, “the sanctions are enormously important.” “By identifying 271 additional people, these sanctions would both freeze assets if there are assets here, and prevent the U.S. entities doing business, as well these sanctions have enormous impact with all of our partners around the world who also work with us on those issues,” Mnuchin said.
