Iraqi Forces Retake Airport in Southern Part of Mosul

Time:3:22 p.m. CEST

Iraqi security forces recaptured airport in Mosul of the Islamic State group militants in operation that lasted four hours. The assault began with overnight airstrikes by the U.S.-led coalition before the military convoys approached to the airport’s perimeter. The airport and the al-Ghazlani base are on Mosul’s southern outskirts, as eastern Mosul was retaken last month. BBC’s correspondent on the ground says, “it is a large piece of land, and controlling it will help secure southern routes to west Mosul.” As BBC reports, a military spokesperson said, “the jihadists have entered a nearby military base.”
