The White House evaluates Iranian’s vessels action near the Strait of Hormuz as, “unsafe and unprofessional.” As the White House press secretary Josh Earnest pointed out on news briefing on January 9 for the correspondents, “these types of actions are certainly concerning and certainly risk escalating tensions, when in our view is to de-escalate tensions.” USS Mahan fired warning shots at Iranian boats on Sunday, near the Strait of Hormuz, the U.S. Defense officials said on Monday, as CNN reports.
The incident happened when five Iranian vessels “approached the USS Mahan and two other U.S. ships that were entering the strait,” CNN says. An U.S. destroyer fired warning shots and used radio calls, flares, bells and whistles “to signal to the ships to stay away.” Pentagon spokesman Capt. Jeff Davis said the boats came “within 900 yards or so” of the Mahan.
