Police confirmed that five people were killed in shooting on January 6 at the Fort Lauderdale International Airport. Several others who were injured in the shooting are in the hospital. Injury toll was up to 13, as a local mayor said to CNN.
Florida Governor Rick Scott will talk to reporters at 4: 45 p.m. ET at the airport.
As the Washington Post writes, “the initial incident occurred in the baggage claim at the the second terminal, which is home to departures and arrivals for Delta and Air Canada, according to the airport.” Footage from the scene of the initial at Terminal 2 showed a chaotic, gruesome scene inside a baggage scene normally teeming with people. Shooting that happened on January 6 at the Fort Lauderdale airport cause multiple people dead, CNN.com reports. The Broward County Sheriff’s Office explained on Twitter. County Mayor Barbara Sharief said to CNN, the gunman is in custody and it was a lone shooter.
“We have no evidence at this time that he was acting with anyone else. He is currently in custody and we’re investigating,” Sharief said. Investigators are looking into the suspect’s motive, she said, as CNN.com says.
All flights were suspended in the wake of the shooting before 1 p.m., and the airport was closed, airport officials said, the Washington Post says.
