Russian Ambassador Dies in Ankara After Police Officer Shots Him at Photo Exhibition

Russia’s ambassador to Turkey, Andrey Karlov died after 22-year-old attacker Mevlut Mert Altintas killed him at the photography exhibition in Ankara on December 19. Both, Russia and Turkey confirmed the attack. Karlov was shot during the speech, but later as Russian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova said, he “Succumbed to his wounds.”

Turkish Interior Minister Suleyman Soylu said the attacker was police officer, who was on duty for two-and-a half years at the riot police in Ankara and he was a graduate of a police vocational school in Izmir, Hurryiet Daily News writes. One of the injured left the hospital, while the other two wounded “were being treated in the hospital.” According to the Turkish Interior Minister, Altintas was “neutralized” in a special operation of the police.
