Macedonia: At Least 22 Dead after Heavy Rain-Floods in Skopje Region

At least 22 people died after the severe weather conditions and heavy rain cause abrupt floods in several neighborhoods and villages in the area of Skopje on Saturday. The Government decided to observe August 8 as a national day of mourning with national flags flown at half-staff. After the floods, the government decided to announce 15-days crisis in Skopje and Tetovo region.

The heavy rains that started on Saturday in the afternoon claimed lives, caused damages to the flooded regions, destroyed homes, and left behind trapped cars in the mudslides. The official institutions are not having first assessments for the damages in the flooded areas, but as the pictures of the villages and neighborhoods show the areas are devastated.

After the first heavy-rain night the people of the crisis areas are evacuated in the local schools, other facilities or they move with the essential belongings to their relatives. Others, returned to the homes, drained the water and removed the mud from the natural disaster. People organize themselves to donate for affected areas and help with donations and fresh waters to the citizens. The opposition SDSM tries to help and their president Zoran Zaev who visited the flooded areas said, “We came up with several specialized vehicles for pumping water and technical water from fire stations.”
