Police Officer Succumbed to Injuries, One Wounded after Shooting in San Diego

Police officers had body cameras on them and the police has a video, San Diego Police Department announced Friday.

Two children in San Diego lost their father on Thursday when a police officer of the police gang unit, Jonathan “JD” DeGuzman, 43 died after it was shot when he and his colleague, officer Wade Irwin, 32 tried to make a stop. San Diego police Chief, Shelley Zimmerman confirmed DeGuzman died and Irwin was injured at the news conference on Friday. The tragic incident led to arrest of a one person and a hunt for other possible accomplices.

Zimmerman announced, a nine-year veteran, officer Irwin, “Was in serious condition but is expected to survive,” KPBS, San Diego’s public media reported on Friday. Police did not release the name of the suspect in the custody, but said the apprehended is a Hispanic male in critical condition with a gunshot wound to the upper torso.

The shooting happened late Thursday in the southeastern San Diego neighborhood of Southcrest, authorities said Friday, CNN reported. Short after the two officers said they were making a stop, they requested “emergency cover,” CNN cites police Chief Zimmerman words. Responding police officers who arrived upon the call, found both with “gunshot wounds to their upper bodies,” CNN publishes.

Police in San Diego said they have evidence of the shootings, as the officers had body cameras on them. Despite, it is unclear what started the gunfire. The mortally wounded officer, Jonathan “J.D.”DeGuzman, Zimmerman explained, succumbed to the injuries despite efforts by the doctors and police to save his life.

The numbers of shooting deaths of the U.S. law enforcement officers until July 2016 is 79% higher than in 2015, CNN reported citing data of the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund. The highest number is in 2011, with 73 officers who died.Tense situation between community and law enforcement officers increased since police officers involvement in the deaths of Alton Sterling in Louisiana and Philando Castile in Minnesota. After those situations on July 17, three police officers died in Baton Rouge, Louisiana and on July 7 five police officers died in an attack.
