“Ss. Cyril and Methodius” University Condemned Violence

Video shows discussion at “Ss. Cyril and Methodius” University Rector Administration on July 4, 2016 on the incidents during student elections last Thursday.

After the incidents during student elections at the “Ss. Cyril and Methodius” University in Skopje last Thursday, the leadership of the oldest state university institution in Macedonia decided to form a commission, which will look at the all facts and evidences for the situation and it will recommend conclusions.

The Rector administration held a meeting early Monday with members of Student Plenum to discuss the unpleasant developments inside and outside the university complex, situated at one of the oldest part of Skopje, close to the Old Bazar.

Even though, the Rector administration, which consist all deans of the faculties in this university, do not have influence in the election of the student leader, the deans and the university senate, wanted to give their participation in reaching of the possible solution. The deans, except of the dean of the Law Faculty, Borce Davitkovski, who left the senate session, agreed on six measures, which could solve potential future problems.Student Plenum, which representatives attended the morning session with the deans, were not completely satisfied with the agreed outcomes.

However, a student Ivana Tufegdzik, who is part of the Student Plenum and it was one of the outspoken activist for the irregularities of the student elections, said this is an opportunity no one in the future to use special police forces toward students.

Rector Administration in the statement condemned the violence in the state and refuted the violence on the students by the state authorities, organizations, individuals or non-governmental organizations.

Members of the Student Plenum played on screen wall outside the University Rectorate building the videos of the police intervention outside the campus. Interior Ministry deployed riot police officers on Thursday night in front of the entrance of the door for the Student Parliament, an organization that is different than the Student Plenum. At one moment, police officers broke the sit-in of the students and made a cordon to divide two groups, one closed inside the building.

The Rector Administration said it has no influence in the procedure for the election of the student leader, but appealed for the changes on the students organization in the “Ss.Cyril and Methodius” University statute.
