Explosion in Istanbul’s Sultanahmet Killed 10

An explosion happened on January 12 in Istanbul’s touristic Sultanahmet Square that killed 10 and wounded at least 15 people, Hurryiet Daily News reported on the base of Istanbul governor’s office. CNN Turk said the explosion occurred by the obelisk of Theodosius in the touristy Sultanahmet Square in the Fatih district in Istanbul. Hurryiet Daily News informed that Turkish Prime Minister Ahmet Davutoglu hold security meeting at Çankaya Palace.

According to sources from the Prime Ministry, Deputy PM Numan Kurtulmuş, Interior Minister Efkan Ala, Health Minister Mehmet Müezzinoğlu, Foreign Ministry Undersecretary Feridun Sinirlioğlu, National Intelligence Organization (MİT) Undersecretary Hakan Fidan and Director General of Public Security Celalettin Lekesiz will attend the meeting.

Six German, one Norwegian and one Peruvian citizen are among the three wounded persons brought to Haseki Hospital, Doğan News Agency has reported. Meanwhile, two people who were lightly wounded in the explosion were hospitalized at Bezmialem Vakıf University Hospital.

Turkish PM Davutoglu talked with German Chancellor Angela Merkel that most of the victims are German and extended his condolences. Hurryiet Daily News informed that, “Deputy Prime Minister Numan Kurtulmuş holds press conference after security meetings, says suicide bomber was identified as a Syrian born in 1988.” He confirmed that it was a suicide attack and that the suspect was of Syrian origin, Hurryiet Daily News reported.
The White House, the State Department, Council of Europe condemned the attack in Istanbul. Individual government also expressed concerns after the attack.
