On Thursday night, a man in his 30s confessed to shooting a Philadelphia police officer on behalf of the Islamic State group, CNN reports, according to the officials at a news conference. Philadelphia Police Officer Jesse Hartnett suffered serious injuries after an alleged assailant targeted him. Philadelphia police homicide captain, said to CNN the suspect explained to investigators he follows Allah, and he pledges his “allegiance to the Islamic State and that is why I did what I did.”
Video released on the Twitter accounts of the American media shows the alleged assailant attempting to shot a police officer who was in his vehicle. Seconds after he reportedly shots the officer and injures him, he tries to escape the scene, but the officer opens the door of the patrol car and shot the assailant. Other police officer later apprehended the suspect.
CNN said that the gunman fired 13 shots from a semiautomatic pistol “into Hartnett’s car as the officer sat in the driver’s seat, a law enforcement source told CNN. The shooting happened about 11:30 p.m. in west Philadelphia, CNN affiliate KYW reported.”
